Established and incorporated in 1976, the American Society of Orthopaedic Physician's Assistants (ASOPA) is an organization for physician extenders who specialize in orthopaedic Board-certified surgery. ASOPA members are usually employed by a Board-certified orthopaedic surgeon or by an orthopaedic facility.

The organization's primary purpose is to enhance the quality of patient care by providing professional development to orthopaedic physician's assistants through continuing education, certification, networking, publications and meeting with peers and other allied health professionals.

ASOPA represents OPAs on a larger scale within the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and The Bone and Joint Decade.

WADE SELECTED AS 2009 BENTON SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
Rachel Wade of Deer Park, Texas was chosen as 2009 winner of the Michael Bradley Benton Memorial Educational Scholarship. Rachel, who is the daughter of ASOPA member Jacqueline Wade, recently graduated from high school with a 4.76 GPA (on a 5.0 scale) and will attend Texas Tech University this Fall. She plans to pursue an Accounting/Finance degree and will receive $2,000 during the upcoming academic year from the Scholarship Committee to help her attain that goal.

In addition to finishing in the top 10% of her high school class of 900, Rachel was active in athletics, playing on the school’s volleyball and golf teams. She also volunteered as a receptionist in the local hospital’s education office. “Rachel certainly embodies the well-rounded individual that our committee looks for when awarding the scholarship each year,” stated Kent Lindeman, Director of the Benton Scholarship Fund. “She is a deserving recipient,” said Lindeman.

The Michael Bradley Benton Memorial Educational Scholarship Fund was created to assist students in completing their college education.  The program is directed specifically to members of the American Society of Orthopaedic Physician’s Assistants (ASOPA), their spouses, children, or grandchildren. AND FRACTURE APPLICATIONS
Submitted by: Penny Meadows, OPA-C
Article content provided by Synthes: Instruments and Implants

This article is based on the latest pediatric hip plates available through Synthes versus the older method of using the angled blade plate that was devised and utilized by Dr. M.E. Müller1. This was the standard used by the AO school of surgeons.
